Therapeutic Massage During Cold and Flu Season?

Dispel the notion that visiting your LMT will ‘force out’ a cold or help you to get well sooner. That is a myth I have heard many times. If you have booked an appointment for bodywork when you are ill you’re simply putting your practitioner at risk…they can also get sick since you are spreading germs. The staff at Healing Mountain Massage School shared this valuable advice regarding the health benefits of massage therapy, prevention tips AND why you should avoid massage therapy when you have a cold or the flu:

Massage During Cold & Flu Season

Massage therapy, especially our Lymphatic Drainage Massage, can help you prevent getting the cold or flu by:

  • Reducing the effects of stress, making you less susceptible to illness.

  • Improving the circulation of the blood and lymph systems.

  • Increasing white blood cells to strengthen your immune system.

  • Helping you sleep better, as rest is key for good health.

Massage is not recommended if you are experiencing the following: fever, diarrhea, or any contagious illness. When you are in the acute stage of an illness it's best to stay home and rest. Here are a few other treatments that can help you on your road to recovery.

• Eucalyptus Steam Bath

Breaks up congestion while soothing nasal & bronchial passages.

• Detox Herbal Body Wrap

Detoxifies the body by assisting the removal of metabolic waste via the lymph system.

Healing Mountain Massage School is one of many professional trade schools in Utah. Their student clinic is well managed, the staff are welcoming, and the students are well trained. Visiting a student clinic for an appointment is an option for consumers seeking discounted spa services.

Utah holds strict requirements for persons seeking a license to practice massage therapy. Students are required to obtain a minimum of 600 hours of education and training. Graduates are then required to pass a national massage licensing exam as well as the Utah Massage Law exam. The Myotherapy College of Utah is the trade school I chose and attended in 1995-1997. Their program offered 780 hours and focused on a clinical approach. Credentials, education, certification, and experience are important for those, like myself, who choose to work alongside other healthcare providers.

Whether you live in Utah or are simply visiting, I encourage you to visit The Kura Door for a professional holistic day spa experience. The Kura Door is located in the Avenues neighborhood of Salt Lake City. The team of massage therapists at The Kura Door are certified in a number of healing modalities such as Lymphatic Drainage, Craniosacral Therapy, and Shiatsu. For over two years I have proudly worked part-time at The Kura Door among dozens of highly educated colleagues. Our clients are encouraged to arrive early and linger in the spa after their appointment. Spa amenities include a eucalyptus steam room and dry sauna, fragrant herbal teas, and organic snacks such as crystallized ginger, almonds, dried apricots, and fresh apples. An Amazing Turn of Events...

On Sunday, December 15th, 2019, I submitted a testimonial to a hero of mine, Miranda Esmonde-White. In case you’re not familiar with her, this is from her website: Miranda developed her own fitness technique, Essentrics® in 1997, is a New York Times best selling author and is one of America’s greatest advocates and educators of healthy aging. Her fitness TV show  Classical Stretch has been airing on PBS and Public Television since 1999.

Miranda is 70 years old, a retired ballerina and has maintained her lean physique! Needless to say, I am a huge fan. As my reader know, I partner with an amazing group of healthcare professionals to manage my chronic conditions. Following Miranda’s Classical Stretch routine has enabled me to strengthen and tone the muscles, tendons, and joints that were compromised before and after each of my hip replacement surgeries.

Miranda inspired me during the darkest days of my recovery. Watching her and participating in her fitness routines strengthened my resolve to age well and remain active. I strive to seek mentors and role models who have blazed the trail ahead of me. Miranda more than surpasses these expectations.

After submitting my testimonial this past Sunday I was astonished to receive a reply the following day from Allison Fraser, Miranda’s Marketing & Public Relations Director located in Montreal, Canada. Allison thanked me for submitting my inspiring story on the Essentrics® testimonial page and asked my permission to post it on their website! I honestly felt a bit light-headed and giddy reading this reply.

One more thing…I included a closing question when I submitted my testimonial. I asked if I might donate a signed copy of my book to share with Miranda, if only to further demonstrate my gratitude. I certainly have no intention to ride on the coattails of others and deeply respect each of the professionals who have assisted me on my journey to improved health. Allison acknowledged my request and wrote that she would be happy to accept a donated copy and would personally give my book to Miranda.

Hearing that my success story will be housed on the Essentrics® website is a great honor, Miranda has touched the lives of millions. I will share the link once it is posted! Today I shipped my book to Canada. As I wrote a personal dedication on the inside cover, I felt as though I was sending one of the most important gratitude gifts of my holiday season.

Writing my book helped me to process and grieve a difficult time in my life. The purpose of publication was to help others facing a similar path and assist caregivers, healthcare providers, and other interested parties about the challenges faced by joint replacement recipients.

Pain Reduction: Music Reduces Need for Post-Surgery Opioids

Researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles, have found that receiving music therapy can significantly lessen a patient’s need for opioids and other painkillers after invasive surgery. The researchers tested 161 patients; 49 in the music group and 112 in a control group. After their surgery, both groups were offered painkillers intravenously at doses requested by the patient. Of those engaged in music therapy, 86 percent avoided the painkillers (emphasis mine), compared to only 26 percent of the control group (1).

Skeptical? Surprised? As a Health Educator, Wellness Coach, Reiki Master, and Author I can attest to these results. I share my personal experience in the resource guide, Butternut to Bionic: A Resource Guide for Hip Replacement Surgery. Music therapy, guided imagery, and positive affirmations are examples of impactful audio tools that can manage pain. I discuss a wide variety of methods that I used to avoid and minimize the need for prescription painkillers, such as highly addictive opioids (Chapter 4, Pain Management: Before, During, and After Surgery). My results impressed my physician, my surgeon, and most importantly…myself, the patient experiencing the pain. Are you seeking better ways to manage your pain? I believe my guide, companion website, and FREE online resources can assist you. This month five lucky winners will receive an autographed copy of my book. Scroll down to learn how to enter.

Describing and measuring pain is a challenging task for patients and medical providers. Managing pain is a priority when you have a chronic condition and become the owner of an artificial joint. Minimizing your pain helps you gain quality sleep, keep your sanity, and improve your quality of life. Each and every one of us handles pain a little differently, experiences it differently, and will tolerate pain in differing degrees. (p.65)

…Listen to soothing music, say a prayer, or listen to guided imagery to relieve any anxiety or preoperative jitters…(p.48, Chapter 2, Preparing for Surgery)

…Both guided imagery and meditation harness your mind’s abilities and can help with pain relief, stress management, and restorative sleep. Using these techniques for pain management is an affordable option. They have no (adverse) side effects, co-pays, or restrictions…(p.74)

My preference to access a wide variety of methods to manage pain has worked well for me. I appreciate that my medical team fully support, and help me to formulate a pain management plan. Soothe Your Senses this Holiday Season! Then Share with a Friend!

Yesterday I took my retired folks to The Grand America Hotel. We wandered the lobby, by chance we saw some of the NBA Laker’s getting on their tour bus, and checked out the Christmas decor inside this gorgeous hotel. We had a nice time, a delicious lunch, AND were a bit worn out at the end of the outing. My parents and I each have our own chronic conditions to manage. We recognize that our bodies are more high maintenance these days. What used to be a quick drive and dash around to see the holiday lights and enjoy the festivities now takes a lot of extra time. We take slower steps, pay attention to our surroundings to avoid falls, paint liquid bandage on our fingertips/cuticles to protect our skin from “dry winter air cracking”, and enjoy activities like The Grand America holiday windows during a weekday to avoid the bustling crowds.

Take good care of you this holiday season. You can gift yourself 5 minutes and soothe your senses right now! ‘Tap with Brad’ to fill your holiday spirit - however you choose to celebrate! Afterwards, pay it forward and share this message with those you care about. We can all use a little help to feel better!

Remember my 3 Key Concepts to improved health: Soothe | Nourish | Rest
