Winning Attitudes

My Thirsty Thursday thought for today is from Rebecca Pace, a guest speaker I am hearing while attending a health conference today.  Rebecca's topic is having a 'Winning Attitude'.  This dynamic lady gifted the audience with 5 guiding questions to ask yourself...

1. What do I want?
2. What am I willing to do to get what I want?
3. How will I know when I have what I want?
4. When I get what I want, what am I willing to do to keep it?
5. If I can't have what I want what is my back up want?

Thought provoking questions.  Take time and consider your answers, they may lead you in a surprising direction.

Be well and be good to yourself this week!

Eat Fresh Foods In Season

Closing August and the harvest theme I’m drawing readers back to my July 2016 newsletter where I wrote about nourishment from the garden. If you missed that edition you can find it posted on my website. For those who don’t have time or the space to garden, find an amazing farmer’s market near you. One of my favorite markets has operated for over 25 years and attracts a glorious variety of farmers and artisans. Eating local is great for the community, my wallet, and my digestive system. I’ve found that when I focus on eating fresh foods that are in season, and unprocessed, that I feel better. Some areas are considered food deserts – do your best with what you have available. Online purchasing can bring us amazing food – even if you need to choose freeze-dried or frozen – if your grocery store lacks quality produce.

To locate farmer’s markets in the US, the USDA has put together a website where you can search by zip code. See if you can connect with farmers in your region, visit the website here

Full Moon Thirsty Thursday

Thirsty Thursday falls on the full moon today! My significant other/best friend/sweetheart Ike was born under the sign of Cancer, a water sign said to have moods following the cycles of the moon.  Ike and I enjoy reading our astrological forecast and have found a great deal of the characteristics fit our personalities. Back on topic, this harvest moon relates to one of my key concepts: Soothe.

We gaze at the full moon for inspiration, times of romance, in wonder, and in awe. Below is a full moon quote to inspire reflection and perception. I hope you have clear skies this evening, and can enjoy seeing the full moon. Wellness is all about simplicity and humor my friends.

“When a wise man points at the moon the imbecile examines the finger.” - Confucius

Harvest Creativity

The Thirsty Thursday August topic, Harvest Time, branches out beyond food. We can also harvest creativity as a way to nourish the spirit, the mind, and the body. August is a popular time for vacations and when many of us are outside more often. Creativity and nature are wonderful partners.

John Muir said, “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.”

Being outdoors, whether close to home or further away, can relieve stress and help you relax.  Days when I am busy and neglect my nature time I turn my attention to houseplants, a vase of fresh cut flowers in my office, portraits of landscapes, or even YouTube videos of ocean waves.  Busy or not, I know that nature moments are helpful for me to de-stress.

Make time for nature whether you are inside or outside. Check out the August edition of my Live Well and Be Well newsletter that is posted on my website. I added a photograph that Ike and I took in July while visiting Mirror Lake in the Uintah Mountains with friends – gaze at that lovely lakeside view. Below the photo I also added a link to an article about nature and the creativity connection.

Be Well!

Let Thy Garden Feed Thee (Yum,Yum!)

The Thirsty Thursday topic for August is...Harvest Time. This morning my garden offered Swiss chard, yellow crookneck squash, baby beets, beet greens, and bell peppers. I picked plenty of greens to eat right away and store for future use. Handfuls of Swiss chard were snipped, washed, blanched, and frozen for winter soups and stews. Tasty greens are my edible wonders that not only make my taste buds happy, they also promote good health. Leafy greens are an acquired taste – there are milder varieties such as baby spinach, parsley, or cilantro that can be chopped and ‘hidden’ in sauces, layered in lasagna, added to salsa, rolled in wraps, or wilted in stir-fry. Be brave – try a new green even if you need to hide it.

Hippocrates, the Father of Modern Medicine said, “Let thy food be thy medicine, and thy medicine be thy food.” Dine well my friends – your fork is a powerful tool towards improving your health and well-being. Get creative and eat your greens.  ☺

Be Well!
