Reasons why you want a copy for yourself and those you care about…

“I am so grateful Tiffany wrote this book! Even though it is specific for those going through hip replacement, her advice is relevant for most any type of surgery. I loved her section on interviewing surgeons and how you can become a more savvy patient by being informed and asking the right questions. She will guide you every step of the way as she has knows the path well. This book will definitely be on my list of recommendations for my patients going through hip replacement, and more. And - it's very well written and easy to read! Thank you, Tiffany!” - Dr. Leslie Peterson, ND

"Anderson uses her knowledge to provide readers with extensive, yet concise information that includes resources, suggestions and a checklist for people who are either going through hip replacement or assisting someone going through the process. This is highly recommended reading." -Paige Lovitt for Reader Views

"This book is a must-read for anyone facing major surgery or those interested in improving their personal health. The most empowering message from the book is that there is life, health, and hope ahead." - Maria Milligan, Utah Stories

"My favorite feature of the book was the author's comparison of joint replacement to necessary home maintenance. As an avid DIY enthusiast, I found this illustration quite engaging and much more fun to read than a book full of medical jargon. I'm pleased to rate it 4 out of 4 stars." - Official Review Online Book Club

“This book is a very helpful guide for anyone facing major surgery. I felt reading the book is like sitting down and talking over experiences and challenges with a friend over a cup of tea. Tiffany is very open and honest. I like how she combines western and alternative medicine possibilities to help the healing process, and honestly could be applied to all aspects of life. I highly recommend this book.” - L. Bodganow, Epidemiologist

“When I began reading Tiffany's book, I was not in need of a hip replacement. I was concerned for an aging parent, who, one day may need such care. Yet, Tiffany engaged me as a reader and I felt inspired by her tenacity and grit, detailing her journey through a most difficult medical crisis. The thing is, it doesn't read like a medical book! She includes so much more, in considering the social, physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual aspects of caring for oneself in a holisitc way. The enhanced healing techniques she provides offer a plethora of options to try. As a mental health practitioner, I am always seeking resources to provide to clients. And I am grateful to have this read, not just as a medical resource, but also a very inclusive guide for pre- and post surgery. What a wonderful offering for anyone anticipating hip surgery or just searching for all around wellness! Touche Tiffany. Well Done.” - T. Busch, LCSW

“The one feature that will keep this book from being required reading for everyone undergoing a total hip replacement is Tiffany’s use of alternative therapies and medicines before, during and after her surgeries. However, given the opioid crisis, it has never been more timely to know there are other ways to deal with postsurgical pain in addition to using pills that for some will lead to addiction.
Butternut to Bionic is Tiffany Anderson’s story, very well written, and an honest, detailed and often humorous account about how she prepared, went through and recovered from two total hip replacements and one hip revision. And while Tiffany is a proponent of alternative treatments, she does not stint on clearly crediting the practitioners of Western medicine, her surgeon, his team, the hospital staff, and all their expertise, for literally giving her her life back.
And though the lists of questions she provides for patients to ask their doctors before surgery, along with the myriad suggestions of how to prepare for life post-surgery alone would make this book a must read for any preoperative patient, it is so much more than that. In Butternut to Bionic Tiffany not only recounts events, but shares her feelings and fears along the way adding another valuable dimension to her story and the advice she gives. Spoiler alert. When she described the moment she learned she had a fracture after her second hip replacement that needed another surgery, I gasped and felt her despair, too.
I highly recommend this book to anyone contemplating total hip replacement. And to any medical provider who has qualms about recommending this book because he or she does not feel comfortable with any or all of the non-traditional therapies Tiffany used, I say, by all means, share the same caveat Tiffany herself consistently gave throughout her book each time she wrote about using an alternative treatment or medicine that worked for her: “Ask your doctor.”
However. Who knows? Maybe one or all of the nontraditional ways Tiffany used that allowed her to wean herself off her strong pain pills earlier rather than later just might keep one less person, hopefully many, from becoming yet another statistic in this country’s ongoing opioid epidemic.” - Lynn Little, RN

“Wow! I wish that I would have read Tiffany's Butternut to Bionic six months before I had my hip replacement. I thought that I had asked plenty of questions prior, but obviously not the right questions to be properly informed and prepared for the surgery or the aftercare. Tiffany has given the reader the knowledge and methods that she has gleaned and organized from her own experiences. Had this resource guide been available before my decisions were made, I feel certain that they would have been more informed and that my surgery would have had a more positive outcome.

Orthopedic surgeons should be providing this resource to their patients pre-surgery. This book covers it all. And although this pertains specifically to joint replacement surgery, this book is a tremendous resource guide for patients facing surgeries or contemplating any medical procedures or treatments. Knowledge is power, and we should always be able to maintain power over our medical decisions.”

Attitude of Gratitude - Fabulous50s, Thank you Schellea!

On June 1st, 2022 I sent the content below to Schellea Fowler via her website, Scheallea created and produces the content for Fabulous50s. Finding her videos amid the pandemic has made a significant difference in my mental and physical health. Check out her workouts that are offered freely online…they are terrific, effective, and challenging but doable routines that can be modified for nearly every fitness level.

Expressing an attitude of gratitude is helpful in a number of ways…who are you grateful for in your own life, and, have you told them exactly what you are grateful for? Warm your heart and warm the heart of another by reaching out and telling them.

Be Well. ~Tiffany

#Fabulous50s

Hello Schellea! Guess what? I am feeling good first and looking good second thanks to finding your videos amid the COVID craziness...like many others, I lost my job and even began losing loved ones before the closures in the U.S. due to political strife and then later to illness. My own background in Health Education has served me well over the years, though I found myself overwhelmed when everything shut down, I was unemployed, a mature empty nester living alone, and then my hometown of Salt Lake City, Utah experienced an earthquake! I believe I experienced a mini nervous breakdown at that point...it was scary and life changed dramatically for everyone. Needless to say, I put on some weight in 2020 and felt very depressed. In 2021, I was climbing out of the mire and working as a Contact Tracer for the local health department and making peace with a very solitary lifestyle, working virtually 50-60 hours per week. Thanks to a random Google search I found your website and workout routines...I have been hooked daily ever since!

Your kind words, energetic spirit, and warmth shines through my television screen every morning. I have smiled more often, danced in my living room, and shed a few more humble/grateful tears since I began working out with you in cyberspace. Thank you, thank you, thank you. The extra twelve pounds that I gained was very significant for me since I have been living with artificial hips for over 10 years and my life pre-COVID was that of an alternative healthcare provider, a writer, Massage Therapist, and Reiki Master...I felt I was living a dream life and practicing what I preached to age well and maintain a lean weight to protect my joints and slow the progression of arthritis.

COVID brought about many lifestyle changes for me - in 2021 when I began working out with you my grown son and I made plans to travel to Disneyland to celebrate Thanksgiving. I could tell that the working out with you increased my stamina, though I still needed to shed a few more pounds to decrease the inflammation and pain I felt on my joints. The next celebration trip took place this April when I visited the Grand Canyon Skywalk for the very first time on my 57th birthday. I traveled to that area partly for work...I published a resource guide for hip replacement recipients 5 years ago and was marketing my book in Clark County, Nevada...I also have made it a goal to visit somewhere new every birthday as a treat for myself. In 2022 I had bumped up my fitness routine by working out with you 1-3 times per day as well as walking daily, stretching, and strength training 2-3 times per week. On April 1, 2022 (yes, I am an April Fool baby) I stood on the Grand Canyon Skywalk 12 pounds lighter and finally reached my pre-pandemic weight of 134 lbs. Again, thank you, thank you, thank you. I encourage everyone I know to tune into your website and YouTube videos and have shared the information on my own website (andersontherapeutics.com) and wellness blog.

The best part of your workouts for me is that I can easily modify your workout around the movement restrictions I have. You see, with posterior dual hip replacement there are a number of ways that I cannot move since certain motions place me at a higher risk for dislocation. Those movements are no bending past 90 degrees, caution when twisting unless I twist the whole body - carefully, and avoiding crossing the center line with my lower body. Receiving artificial hips was another dramatic change to my life - I became bionic at age 46 after a series of bizarre medical conditions that left me with questions and a lot of debt. At the encouragement of my medical team in 2011, I put my writing and Health Education skills to work and produced the book, Butternut to Bionic: A Resource Guide to Hip Replacement Surgery. This July, my book celebrates 5 years in publication and I feel I am thriving with joint replacement and now have another health professional on my team...that person is you!

In gratitude for all I have experienced, I am giving away electronic copies of my book for 5 days via Amazon, on July 11-July 15. While it was written for a Western audience, the recovery tips that continue to work for me align with your own approach to health and might interest you. I would gladly send you a signed paperback copy to show my appreciation and gratitude.

Here's a link to a picture of me standing on the Grand Canyon Skywalk in April - feeling lighter, stronger, determined, and grateful. I'll keep on watching you and will see you tomorrow for another workout.

Aromatherapy: Health Benefits of Lemon Essential Oil

“The day before my first hip replacement surgery I packed a variety of personal items for my hospital stay. Besides my clothing and essentials, I brought along the following:

  • Arnica and other homeopathic remedies

  • Hand sanitizer

  • Lip balm

  • Lemon essential oil and cotton balls

Why lemon essential oil? Lemon has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties…plus I enjoy the uplifting smell. I placed a few drops on a cotton ball and swabbed my food tray, wiped down the hospital bed rails, cleaned off the television remote control, and placed a scented cotton ball in my pillowcase.”

-Tiffany Anderson, LMT, RMT, BS, CHES

Excerpt: Butternut to Bionic: A Resource Guide to Hip Replacement Surgery, Chapter 2- Preparing For Surgery, pg. 46.

Aromatherapy is a powerful tool that, if used incorrectly, can harm as well as heal. An article by John Hopkins Medicine discusses the impacts of potential misuse, allergic reactions to be aware of, and describes how scent molecules travel through the olfactory nerves (via our nose) directly to the brain and impact the emotional center…the amygdala. Read the article in it’s entirety, here.

Having worked in a hospital, I recognize that staff work diligently to keep facilities clean AND a hospital is teeming with all sorts of contaminants. After all, hospitals are where sick and injured people go to get well. Even though the rates of MRSA (staph infection) contracted within a hospital setting have dropped markedly over the last decade, MRSA still accounts for 20% of hospital infections. Plus, there are additional infectious diseases to be concerned about. Practice caution when using essential oils - understand the toxicity levels and the best method to use such as inhaling, topical, or ingesting. I prefer scent and use essential oils sparingly…effective, quality products are expensive and a little bit goes a long way. A research paper shared by the National Library of Medicine titled, The Effects of Essential Oils and Terpenes in Relation to Their Routes of Intake and Application shares compelling details regarding the history and use of essential oils.

Are you a pro-active patient? Take extra measures to protect yourself and take action to prevent infection. Simple preventative steps = added safety and better health.

After an invasive and life-changing surgery it was well worth my time and minimal effort to help sanitize the area I was recuperating in. I follow a similar and simple cleaning routine while I travel; using lemon essential oil to clean the interior of rental cars and disinfect my seating area when I travel by air. I practiced these efforts long before the current pandemic and will continue to practice these efforts long after. Most importantly, I wash my hands often. Read more about the health benefits of lemon essential oil and find a recipe for an inexpensive lemon hand sanitizer here.

Heliotherapy...

As a 57-year-old Caucasian woman living in Utah, I am at risk for low vitamin D levels. Alongside the weekly sublingual supplementation recommended by my doctor, the obvious solution I follow to prevent low vitamin D levels is by receiving adequate sunlight. Sunshine is important to our health in more ways than one. Read more about sunlight deficiency here.

The bodies largest organ, our skin, is designed to work together with the liver and kidneys to synthesize vitamin D with minimal exposure to the sun (about 20 minutes per day). Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin, and when stored in the body, can sustain a person for around two months before the fat stores are depleted. Sunlight is free, and when accessed naturally the skin will never overproduce vitamin D - though if you rely on supplements you can take too much, which may lead to toxicity.

Sunlight as ‘light therapy’ has been used historically by mankind; referred to as heliotherapy and phototherapy. Medical uses of sunlight have treated conditions such as rickets, depression, arthritis, gout, psoriasis, scleroderma, acne, insomnia, fighting infection, and more.

This advice is not a substitute for medical care. Speak to your doctor, investigate the research on this topic, and become better informed in regards to managing your health.

Be Well, ~Tiffany

Reiki is a Japanese word meaning universal life energy.

This gentle, non-intrusive method can alleviate pain and stress. Reiki practitioners use little to no pressure and follow a series of hand positions on or slightly above the head, shoulders, back, chest, stomach, and limbs. This technique is adaptable to nearly any setting such as hospital bed or chair, and through bandages.

“During my health crisis, medications failed and diagnostic procedures nearly bankrupted me. For relief I turned to nutrition, meditation, prayer, Reiki, and acupuncture during what I believed were my final days. Through those methods, I found healing and pain management. Reiki and a plant-based diet rejuvenated my liver and calmed my heart. Through a regular Reiki practice my health improved and freed me from many medications.”
