I watched this video in AARP's Solo Aging feed today…on Christmas morning, and the content rang true for me. Preferring my own company, traveling on my own and sharing space with select others (as I wish) has been liberating after spending decades feeling that my only purpose was to be a caregiver for others while also neglecting myself - that was misinformation attached to a shame based childhood and upbringing. Being exposed to oppressive lies, dysfunctional conditioning, and subjected to fear tactics as a child led me to making a lot of mistakes in life, relationships, and work. I inevitably freed myself from many of these constructs after I faced life threatening illness and realized not one person in my world at that time was willing to step up to the plate and help me for a change.
I again became the caregiver and healed myself - and most importantly, gave myself the gift of removing the emotional vampires who sought only to sabotage my well being. My gift to them was my absence. It has taken time to learn how to be discerning and selective in those who value me. I am a work in progress and am happily enjoying Christmas today on my own. Celebrating my existence is how I am successfully aging solo. The dialogue in this video explains exactly how empowering and beautiful solitude can be.
