Headaches? Find Relief Activating Pressure Points...

Depending on the source and cause of a headache, a number of self treatments can be very effective to better manage headache pain. Consider these tips…

  • Temple Headaches: Press the hollow of the temples, a finger width beyond the outer end of the eyebrow.

  • Eye Pain: Press in hollow on top of the eyebrows, one finger width above the pupil of the eye.

  • Sinus Congestion: Press in the dimple at the inner end of the eyebrow, directly above the corner of the eye.

  • Nasal Congestion: Press in the dimples beside the nose, one finger width away from each nostril.

  • Jaw Tension: Press hollow found in front of ear at cheek bone level (open your mouth slightly to find the depression).

Activating these pressure points on your own may help to take the edge off pain and discomfort. It’s important to apply steady, even pressure on the described points.

Therapeutic Massage: A Healthy Addiction?

Addiction is often a ‘dirty word’. Your January resolutions may have centered on your dependence on an assortment of products. Such as…

  • A desire to quit using (or reducing) tobacco and/or nicotine

  • Perhaps you felt the need to minimize caffeine intake

  • Or lower your intake of refined sugars

  • Maybe you’ve wanted to drink less alcohol

These are admirable goals, and depending on your reliance on the above products, you’ll likely feel uncomfortable as you wean yourself away from any of those addictive substances. Are you feeling stressed, fatigued, having trouble sleeping, feeling a bit cranky? Therapeutic Massage can support your body and mind during the weaning process and become a healthy alternative to negative habits. Would I confess and say that I am addicted to therapeutic massage? Perhaps I am. I will freely admit that, I cannot imagine my life without the healing modality like Therapeutic Massage.

Bodywork and touch therapies are crucial aspects of my personal wellness plan; these practices have changed my life both as a practitioner, and as a recipient.

Massage is much more than a luxury. The benefits of Therapeutic Massage are tremendous. In fact, touch therapies are healing modalities that can assist you towards specific health-related goals. For example, during smoking cessation the body will begin a detoxification process…experienced as withdrawal symptoms. Depending on the smoker’s current health (a release from a medical professional may be necessary), a therapeutic massage can assist them during the cessation process. Here’s how…

  • Therapeutic Massage directly affects circulation and lymphatic flow. This will aid in lowering blood pressure and in the removal of waste products.

  • While receiving a Therapeutic Massage endorphins are released in the brain. These endorphins provide both a natural uplifting feeling and an overall sense of well-being.

  • Therapeutic Massage stimulates the skin, our body’s largest organ of detoxification, and brings nutrients to the cells and increases tone over time. The appearance, texture, and color of your skin can and does improve when you receive a therapeutic massage on a regular* basis.

  • Therapeutic Massage counteracts the stress response, assisting a person to relax and relieve muscle aches and pains.

  • Lastly, a Therapeutic Massage supports good health and is a positive reward as you progress towards freedom from any addictive substance.

Whether someone is detoxing from a substance or not, the above health benefits apply. I have been a Professional Licensed Massage Therapist for over two decades and practice what I preach. Visit my website to learn more about the health benefits of Bodywork and Therapeutic Massage.

Investigate further and read in-depth studies and research on the subject. I encourage you to visit The Touch Research Institute that is located in Miami, Florida. As stated on their website, TRI is the first center in the world devoted solely to the study of touch and its application in science and medicine.

*Research has shown that long-term health benefits are achieved when receiving a therapeutic massage every 4-6 weeks. This measure is also dependent on the recipient - you decide what works best for you. Personally, I feel my best when I receive professional bodywork at least once a month.

Living Well with Joint Replacement

“When I learned that I needed a joint replacement, my initial fears were that my lifestyle would diminish and that I would lose physical freedoms. Prior to surgery, I didn’t know what to expect and what I may never get to enjoy again.

Experiencing a health crisis leading to hip replacement at age 45 put me in a state of shock. I envisioned the possibilities of my future collapsing. Instead, this experience has been humbling and given me an opportunity to focus on what I can do.

Today, I pay more attention to my body, my movements, and am aware of my surroundings. I scan ahead while walking to avoid slipping hazards, I wear solid shoes with nonslip tread, and follow a sensible fitness routine to stay lean and strong.”

-Excerpt from, “Butternut to Bionic: A Resource Guide to Hip Replacement Surgery*, Chapter 7 Final Thoughts: Beyond Surviving, Thriving!, pg. 111.

*Nominated for the 2018 Health Literacy Award and 2018 AARP Purpose Prize

Are you or a loved one facing joint replacement surgery? You may feel overwhelmed, unsure of what to expect, and have plenty of questions. Perhaps you are already ‘Bionic’ and have lived with an artificial joint(s) for quite awhile. Joint replacement surgeries, whether they are for hips, knees, or shoulders, share commonalities…each procedure installs equipment that is designed to provide years of mobility. The patients’ jobs are to heal, recover, and embrace the new bionic part as a tool helping them to move.

Butternut to Bionic is a resource guide for anyone preparing for surgery AND a living well guide for those who have received artificial joints. Each chapter offers a variety of resources, suggestions, and checklists to help recipients achieve a successful outcome and return to (plus maintain) a high quality of life.

Facing the challenge of joint replacement is a team effort. Family members, caregivers, and healthcare providers will find the book, Butternut to Bionic, intriguing, insightful, and useful.

“My surgeon informed me that with good care I can easily expect 25 to 30 years of use from my artificial joints. It’s nice to have an idea of an expiration date. Around three decades provides me with plenty of time to live and play. What will I do if I have future surgeries? I’ll cross that bridge if it presents itself.”

Laughter Therapy: Health Benefits

“Did you know that endorphins are released in your brain when you laugh and they act as natural painkillers? Laughter manages stress and minimizes pain.” - Excerpt from Butternut to Bionic, Chapter 4 Pain Management - Before, During, and After Surgery, pg. 77

Watching a British comedy before bedtime is one of my favorite ‘Soothe’ methods. Laughter calms my mind, relieves tension, and helps me to sleep more soundly.

Health Nut vs Health Inspired?

Practicing what I preach has earned me the title of “Health Nut”. More often than not (thankfully), this label has come my way from people who believe they mean well…and typically admit that they are envious and wish they shared my level of commitment. Let me tell you how this started for me. The following insight about myself is from the book, Butternut to Bioinic (pg.9):

“My interest in health was driven early on from seeing relatives experience pain, disability, and disease from preventable conditions. My “aha” moment came at age 18 when I moved away from my parents’ smoke-filled home and cured my childhood asthma. I realized that health isn’t some elusive goal to chase; health is our natural state of being to nurture and maintain.” -Tiffany Anderson, Author

That ‘aha’ moment guided and inspired me. When I am working with a Health Coaching client, goal setting and making an action plan leads me towards understanding what might motivate them. On my client intake form, one question asks to create a vision of their goal.

Our vision is how we see the big picture, our ultimate plan which will always serve to motivate us. Visions motivate us because they are our ultimate desires or inner picture of how we would really like to see our lives play out. If you don't start with a vision it will become hard to stay motivated to overcome setbacks and obstacles as you start to make lifestyle changes.

When creating your vision, it is important to think of internal reasons you want to achieve your goals opposed to external reasons. Internal reasons are things that are life changing such as improved health, becoming more active with your family, or accomplishing a long term goal such as running a marathon. These are reasons that will keep you motivated. To overcome the day to day obstacles your vision must be greater than your challenges.

Today is Day Two of my Nourish and Self-Care Challenge*: For those who are participating along with me, I invite you to read your goal aloud and revisit it as a vision. Ask yourself, what do you envision happening or achieving or obtaining by reaching your goal?

Find your motivation to succeed and become health inspired.
