Topical Analgesics...

When muscle aches, pain, and stiffness occur we typically reach out and rub or press on the area for relief. Instinctively we are self soothing and investigating the soreness. With touch we can note any swelling, ‘knots’, heat, bruising, and level of sensitivity. Depending on the cause or severity of an ache, use of a topical analgesic can relieve pain fairly quickly. While many of these products simply mask the pain, others contain specific ingredients that are absorbed by the skin and offer a healing tool that can speed recovery. Injuries and chronic pain require professional medical care and diagnosis, whereas everyday aches, bumps, and bruises can be managed using topical products.

Topical analgesics help me to manage arthritis pain, stiffness I experience due to artificial joints, and muscle soreness from exercise and one of my jobs as a massage therapist. I need and expect my body to perform and to nurture it I find that topical products provide great results and leave me with no ill side effects. Speak to your doctor if you have concerns or questions about using any health related product. Below are a list of topical analgesics that I recommend (Amazon links are simply offered as a reference since the best prices are often found at a local retailer):

Procure Epsom Salt Gel - this gel is surprisingly effective though I prefer soaking in a tub with Epsom salts for best results. The gel can feel a bit grainy…a little bit goes a long way. Epsom gel is great for travel, to take on hikes, or keep at your office for spot treatments.

Arnica Cream - Arnica is plant-based and a homeopathic that I have used for decades. It is useful to soothe bruising, soreness, and sprains. Both my physician and surgeon recommended that I use arnica cream and in tablet form after my hip replacement surgeries to speed healing.

CBD Massage Oil - CBD products are relatively new to me and I began using this specific product a month ago to minimize my use of ibuprofen and help me to manage joint pain. This oil also contains menthol, peppermint oil, and clove oil leaving an ‘icy hot’ type of feeling. The results have been very positive for me.

Liniment rubs - the LDN Arthritis & Sport Rub with wintergreen was a surprising find at my local Dollar Store. My landlord first recommended this to deter spiders (which did work) and I also used it topically. The analgesic results are quick though not as long lasting as the above products. Due to the rubbing alcohol base the liniment is cooling and has a drying effect. This liniment pairs well when poured into an Epsom salt bath.

Besides topical products to help manage muscle pain and soreness, remember to drink plenty of water since muscle pain is common when we are dehydrated. Stretch often, receive regular massage therapy, use ice packs on tense areas to decrease inflammation, and reduce your intake of processed foods that add excess weight and cause swelling.

Soothe in Nature...

Hiking in the canyon near my home is one of my favorite ways to exercise, relieve stress, and oxygen binge. Spending time in nature is therapeutic and soothes the senses. Whether you are outdoors or indoors, take time for yourself today and every day. Gazing at a beautiful piece of art or watching a video of a natural setting via YouTube can help you to wind down and relax. Investing in your health consistently provides profound results.

Simplicity is often the key to good health. Apply my 3 Key Concepts - Soothe - Nourish - Rest.

Inflammation: Consequences and Cure

Prior to my hip replacement surgeries I experienced an unexplained case of jaundice leading to both heart and liver failure. The swelling and inflammation I experienced in my left leg during this frightening time was nearly impossible for me to manage. As Dr. John McDougall describes, Inflammation is the consequence of injury, such as from a cut, burn, or infection. The pain, redness, swelling, and heat that follow are natural, necessary processes for healing. These symptoms and signs of inflammation resolve after the single event. However, with repetitive injury, inflammation can become long-standing, referred to as "chronic inflammation." This nonresolving inflammation is a major driver of disease.

Outside of injury and chronic conditions such as arthritis, I learned that a considerable amount of the inflammation I experienced was due to my diet. Eating foods that created more inflammation perpetuated my condition and prevented me from getting well. By shifting to a whole food plant-based oil free diet I began to consume meals designed to heal, decrease inflammation, and promote good health. Aside from food, there are a number of resources and practices that I follow to manage inflammation…

  • Receiving regular massage, acupuncture, and Reiki

  • Weekly Epsom salt soaks

  • Using ice packs to decrease swelling and manage pain

  • Elevating my legs to support circulation

  • Regular exercise

  • Maintaining a healthy weight

The consequences of a poor diet significantly changed my life. I experienced life-threatening illness, survived, recovered, and have returned to an active lifestyle. I believe that everyone and everything we encounter arrives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. My illness and surgeries led me to watching the film Forks Over Knives and reading The Starch Solution. Both provided me with cures and a solution. In 2017 my resource guide was published offering recovery tips that apply to nearly every type of surgery. Butternut to Bionic is my story and was nominated for the 2018 AARP Purpose Prize and 2018 Health Literacy Award for good reason. Written from the patient perspective, I share guidance, support, and encouragement to help patient’s achieve a successful outcome and return to a high quality of life.

Prevent and HEAL Degenerative Arthritis...

Arthritis has been part of my life for years. Many family members, friends, and clients also live with one or more forms of arthritis. I had mistakenly believed that this condition was only a sign of age, wear and tear, and was inevitable. Those beliefs are incorrect, though once effected, arthritis is manageable as I share in my resource guide. Dr. John McDougall recently posted his April 2004 article discussing high cases of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis here in the West. He notes that a number of dietary factors damage joint health:

  • Malnourishment from a Western diet. Minerals and nutrients are absent in overly processed food…especially fast food - without these nutrients, bones and joints are not strong enough to maintain good health.

  • After eating a fatty meal the blood stream is clogged and circulation slows. Joints rely on circulation to obtain nutrients and to cleanse waste. If a drainpipe is full of debris a sink is slow to drain, right? Same concept…unclog the arteries and the system flows freely.

  • Excess weight wreaks havoc on joints. After my hip replacements my surgeon urged me to stay lean to protect my new joints. An extra five pounds of weight places twenty-five pounds of pressure on a joint. Have you ever seen tree branches sagging from the weight of winter snow? With enough pressure the branch will break. When carrying excess weight your body is not designed to hold, the strain and pressure on your joints is similar. Hips, knees, and ankles are especially overburdened with extra weight. Collapsed ankles, swelling, and failed joints leading to replacement are the result. Lose the weight and relieve the burden on your joints.

My osteoarthritis is the result of poor dietary choices. I have no doubt that my condition was self-inflicted after years of drinking soda, eating fatty foods, and following high protein diets. Shifting to a whole food plant-based oil free diet has been miraculous for me. As published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, a healthy lifestyle reduces inflammation, reduces pain, and can prevent further damage from arthritis. Accelerated Healing With Cell Salts...

Both my Naturopath, Dr. Leslie Peterson, and homeopath, David R. Card, stressed the importance cell salts for better health. According to Card, “Cell salts, also known as tissue salts, exist in every human body. They are the inorganic biochemical elements found in the blood and tissue. They are the builders and the catalysts for many processes, including assimilation and detoxification.” Cell salts were a crucial part of my recovery after each of my hip replacement surgeries. In my resource guide I describe the supplemental support I used (pg 36) post surgery as prescribed by my physician. This support included the homeopathic Hyland’s Bioplasma cell salts to stimulate my body’s natural healing mechanisms and to satisfy any mineral imbalances.

There are a number of cell salt combinations you can put together to support the specific needs of your body. These salts provide tools the body needs for healing. An easy to read introduction to cell salts has been written by David R. Card, homeopath and nutritionist. Check out the pocket guide, 12 Essential Minerals for Cellular Health, to learn more about both the internal and external therapeutic uses of cell salts.
